Discovering the Diversity of Gwinnett County - Lilburn, GA

"Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!"

Gwinnett County
Lilburn, GA

This blog takes us 1/4 of the way through the cities of Gwinnett County. There are officially 16 municipalities in Gwinnett County. So without any further ado, let's venture to Lilburn, GA. The community in which my family lives.

FACTS:
Lilburn was established in 1910 but has a very interesting history. According to the City of Lilburn website. the town died during the Great Depression and no longer had any form of government. The city government wasn't re-established until 1955. In 1976, the city hall was built in what is known as Old Town Lilburn. In 2016, the new city hall was built closer to Lawrenceville Highway with a new public library. The city is in the process of realigning the vision of Old Town Lilburn.

Lilburn is home to the largest Mandir Temple outside of India. More than 34,000 individual pieces were hand carved in India and shipped to Lilburn. It is a breathtaking building on the edge of Lilburn. You can read more about it by following the" Mandir Temple" link above. In the summer, they host monthly Food Truck Tuesdays at Lilburn City Park, weekly Farmer's Market at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church and their annual Sparkle in the Park July 4th celebration at Lilburn City Park. The Lilburn Women's Club  hosts Lilburn Daze every fall where local artisans rent a booth to sell their creations. On Tuesday, June 13 they will be hosting their next Food Truck Tuesday.

Lilburn has two high schools Berkmar and Parkview, which is technically in unincorporated Gwinnett. Parkview is the high school that has a football rivalry with Brookwood which is in Snellville. Each year they play each other in the game that is called "Battle of Five Forks" followed by a huge bonfire.

MY EXPERIENCE:
My family and I moved here on July 4 of 2015. Our kids were going into 7th and 4th grades and now the older is turning 20 next week and the younger going into senior year. We moved from Woodstock, GA to Lilburn to be closer to our jobs and have a shorter commute going into Atlanta. Since, we've changed jobs so that is no longer an issue. We were really impressed with the small community feel so close to metro Atlanta, having some stores so close, and the diversity of the community. Over the years Lilburn has grown and they have built more homes, adjusted schools and districts, and are redeveloping downtown. We enjoy hanging out at the park or Agavero Parkside during summer events. We also enjoy Los Hermanos as they recently opened their new space on the corner of Lawrenceville Highway and Killian Hill Rd. It's a nice "quiet" community close to metro Atlanta.

WHAT'S NEXT:
This week I will be traveling to Duluth, Georgia to learn more about their history and what their community offers. I'm looking forward to exploring this community as I hear a lot of good things about it.
