Discovering the Diversity of Gwinnett County - Duluth, GA
"Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!"
GWINNETT COUNTY -CITY OF DULUTH, GA
FACTS:
The City of Duluth had its beginnings in 1821 when a settler, Evan Howell and his family, came from North Carolina to build a home at the base of the Chattahoochee River. This area came be known as Howell's Cross Roads. As the town grew, the railroad was built to be able to deliver goods such as cotton, expand commerce, and community. At one time the area had three cotton gins, warehouses, mule trading barns, and blacksmiths shops. The name was changed to Duluth after an incident happened in Duluth, MN. You can read more about it on the Duluth Historical Society website. The city was officially chartered in 1876.
Today, downtown Duluth is a vibrant area with shops, restuarants, City Hall, Gwinnett County Public Library, small businesses, and the Town Green. You can visit their site at Undeniably Downtown Duluth for information on all things downtown. Duluth is also home to the Gas South District where the Gas South Convention Center is. Here they host many shows, conferences, and even the Atlanta Gladiator and Georgia Swarm games.
MY EXPERIENCE:
I recently visited Downtown Duluth and was impressed by their walkability to shops, restaurants, and small businesses. It includes a beautiful town green where events happen frequently. I also visited one of their shops and was pleasantly surprised by the workers hospitality. I have known about Duluth, GA for many years. When I worked for the Baptist Association in Wisconsin, we had partner churches from Duluth, MN and Duluth, GA. That is when I learned they were "sister" cities. Although, I just learned the history about why they are connected.
Tonight, they host their weekly community event Fridays-N-Duluth starting at 6 pm. They have food trucks, live music, and family entertainment. Tomorrow, Saturday, July 9 is Viva Las Duluth starting at 6 pm. Check out their calendar of events here.
WHAT'S NEXT:
There are so many great places to visit in Gwinnett County, I have a hard time deciding where to go next. Since this is a journey through Gwinnett County, this week I won't tell you where I'm off to next on this adventure. You will have to check back when the next one comes out to see what amazing treasures I find.
